A gallery app that can't upload your photos. Now on Google Play.

Simplify my Gallery is out on Google Play: a free, offline photo and video gallery for Android with no ads, no account and no internet permission at all.

Your phone’s camera roll is the most personal thing on it. It has your kids, your passport, the screenshot of a bank transfer and the photo of a parking spot from three years ago. And the app most people use to look at all of it usually wants an account, wants to sync to a cloud, or wants to show an ad between two holiday photos.

Simplify my Gallery is now live on Google Play. It is a free photo and video gallery for Android that shows the pictures already on your phone, in the folders they already live in. No ads, no account, no subscription, and no internet permission. Not “we promise not to use it” — the app simply does not have it.

Because the good ones kept going away.

For years, the advice for anyone who wanted a clean, offline gallery on Android was simple: install one of the small, free, open gallery apps and forget about it. Then some of those apps were sold, and updates started arriving with ads, trackers and paywalls bolted on. Others got abandoned. The stock gallery on many phones now nudges you towards a cloud backup. Google Photos is excellent at what it is built for — backing up your library to Google’s servers, tied to your Google account — but that is not what everyone wants from the app that opens when you tap a photo.

What I wanted was smaller and stubborn: open fast, show my folders, view the photo, get out of the way. Forever. So I built it.

No internet permission: privacy you can verify

Most apps ask you to trust a privacy policy. Simplify my Gallery asks you to check a permission list instead.

Android apps must declare every permission they need, and Google Play shows that list on every store page. Gallery does not declare INTERNET. That means the operating system itself stops it from opening a network connection. It cannot:

  • upload a photo or a thumbnail anywhere,
  • load an advert,
  • send analytics, crash reports or a device ID,
  • “phone home” after a future update quietly changes its mind.

If a future version ever needed the network, the permission would appear on the Play listing and Android would show it — you would see it before anyone else did. That is the difference between privacy by promise and privacy by construction.

The app is technically unable to send your photos anywhere. You don’t have to take my word for it — scroll to “App permissions” on the Play listing.

What it does

Gallery reads the photos and videos your phone already stores and shows them the way they are actually organised: Camera, Screenshots, WhatsApp Images, Downloads, whatever folders you have.

  • Folder view that mirrors your phone — no invented “moments”, no AI albums, no duplicates.
  • Group by day or month, with five ways to sort.
  • Full-screen viewer with pinch-to-zoom and video playback.
  • Details for every photo: file size, dimensions, camera, and EXIF data, read straight from the file.
  • Crop and rotate for quick edits.
  • Favourites, multi-select and hidden folders, so the screenshot folder doesn’t clutter the main view.
  • Light, dark and pure black themes — pure black is easy on OLED screens and on your battery.
  • Five accent colours plus a custom one, and six app icons to choose from.
  • 2 to 5 columns, adjustable corner radius, text size and contrast.

The whole app is under 5 MB. There is no splash screen, no onboarding carousel and no “sign in to continue”.

Every gallery app makes trade-offs. Here are the ones that matter most for privacy and day-to-day use.

If you want automatic cloud backup, a cloud-first gallery is the right tool, and you can keep using it alongside this one. If you want a fast, offline gallery app with no ads that will never upload, sync or track anything, that is exactly the gap Simplify my Gallery fills.

Free without a catch

There is no Pro version, no trial, no in-app purchase and no “remove ads” button, because there are no ads to remove. Every feature is unlocked the moment you install it.

People reasonably ask how that works. The honest answer: these are small, focused apps built by one person, and a gallery that cannot reach the internet costs nothing to run. There are no servers to pay for, because there are no servers. It is part of a family of apps built on the same rule — free, no ads, no accounts, no tracking — with a music Player, a voice Recorder, a two-pane Files manager and a Launcher on the way.

Who it is for

  • Anyone looking for a private gallery app for Android that does not need an account.
  • People switching away from a gallery app that started showing ads after an update.
  • Anyone who wants to view photos offline without a cloud backup nagging them.
  • Parents setting up a phone for a child, where “collects nothing at all” is the right default.
  • Anyone who just wants their photos in the folders they put them in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. It is free to download and free to use, with every feature included. There are no ads, no subscriptions and no in-app purchases.

Does it upload or back up my photos?

No. The app does not request the internet permission, so Android does not allow it to connect to any network. Your photos and videos stay on your phone.

Can it replace Google Photos?

As the app that opens and shows your photos, yes. It does not do cloud backup — on purpose. If you rely on cloud backup, you can keep that running and use Simplify my Gallery as your everyday, offline viewer.

Which Android versions are supported?

It is published on Google Play for current Android phones. The store page shows whether it is compatible with your device before you install.

What if a feature I need is missing?

Tell me. Gallery is out, and it is still being worked on — requests go straight into the next release.

Simplify my Gallery is available now. Install it, open the permission list, and see for yourself how little it asks for.
